Couldn’t score an invite to one of the most talked about weddings of the summer? Don’t worry, here’s an inside scoop on one of the most interesting trends spotted at the Kardashian-Humphries wedding. The self declared bride of America’s own “Royal Wedding” sported not one, not two, but three gowns on her big day and with each of them, she paired a myriad of custom made accessories. One of those pieces is a trend that dates back hundreds upon hundreds of years to ancient cultures of the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
Yes, we’re talking about her diamond headband! Kim donned a 65 karat diamond headband custom created for the occasion by Lorraine Schwartz for her August 20th nuptials to basketball player Kris Humphries, and the talk about this style has not stopped since that moment! Headbands have been a customary part of weddings in the ancient Indian culture for eons. Headbands can be as simple as a gold chain, or as intricate as an individual piece full of precious and semiprecious stones caressing and cascading down the bride’s forehead.
What is most amazing about this trend is that it’s absolutely versatile. What Kim shows us is one way to dress up a headband for an occasion such as a wedding, but what we know from the Hollywood hippie trend is that headbands can be worn with just about any outfit to give a more relaxed, eclectic feel. From Sienna Miller to Nicole Richie, celebs have radiated effortlessly chic looks that can be translated to cost effective shots of glamor for any ensemble.
How can you make this look work for you? Grab headbands at a local accessory store, vintage store, or consignment store. You can even try big chain stores like Forever 21 that have a broad selection of headbands in all kinds of styles. If you’re looking for jeweled headbands à la Kim and Paris, try stores like Nordstrom, which -while pricier than some other options- will give you a long lasting piece that can dress up just about any look.

Let’s put this thought to the test by creating a set of two viable outfits with one maxi dress from Rent the Runway. We’ll start off with the oh-so-fabulous BCBG Deep Blue Sea gown, easily found on RTR. What will differentiate each outfit will be the accessories we pair with them. I’m looking at this like a math formula, we’ll start off with the dress and add pieces together to get either a fierce hippie casual outfit or a va-va-voom night out on the town look.
