The end of the semester rapidly approaches – and that can only mean one thing- FORMAL SEASON! Forget exams, papers, and all the work you have to do, it’s time for an update on how to look amazing for whatever fabulous events you’ll be attending in these next few weeks. Looking to some of our favorite celebs for guidance, we’ll deconstruct some of the most incredible looks for your winter formals that will have you camera and red carpet ready. This is going to be a three-blog series, each week I will focus on a new trend. This week, we’re zooming in on velvet dresses. As the temperature drops, every glamazon is faced with a difficult decision – should she dress for the weather or dress for the trends. This winter, the fashion gods have heard our call, and brought forth the velvet dress – warm enough for the moments you spend outside, yet lightweight enough for a night of dancing. Spotted on celebs like Emma Watson, it’s never been easier to be comfortable and chic simultaneously.

Here, Emma plays up her wispy cut with a simple black wrap dress. It’s one shouldered, which shows off her amazing arms, and also gives her that youthful feel. You don’t have to look far to find a fabulous variety of velvet dresses that will flatter every body type – Rent the Runway carries a whole range of velvet dresses. Let’s start with this bright blue number by Badgley Mischka that frames every body in a flattering and fun way.

Wear the Badgley Mischka Sapphire Star Dress to show off your back's beautiful curves

But if you’re a simplistic kind of  girl, or you want to use bold accessories to make your look pop, black velvet dresses are equally chic and just as curve loving.

Wear the Badgley MIschka Velvet Ink Mini with a bright pair of flats and a blazer for dinner with the girls, or just pair it with bright pumps and jewelry for formal.

And unlike the Velveteen Rabbit, who was abandoned by his owner, it’s highly unlikely you’ll ever want to take a dress this comfy off. The next fabulous dress is perfect not only for formal, but also for the Preference Round of Recruitment. If your school does Winter Recruitment, what could be more perfect for an “all black” round than a warmer fabric?

This simple Robert Rodriguez On the Prowl dress shows off your inner tigress by keeping it basic. Pair this outfit with just about anything and you're ready to attack!

And last but not least, my personal favorite of the black velvet dresses – just fancy enough to pair with jewelry for formal, yet stylish enough for a night out clubbing.

Wear the Nicole Miller Velvet Cowl Mini for those moments when you dance the night away.

So ladies, don’t fret. Formal season may be upon us but there’s no reason why you can’t look fabulous, fierce, and have it all on lock. You might not be Katy Perry, but baby, you can be a firework this season with velvet dresses from Rent the Runway.

Until next time,
