It’s January, it isn’t getting any warmer, and our skin isn’t going to get a break any time soon. As the daily armor we use against the harsh winter elements, our faces are constantly red, runny, chapped, and chilled. How to combat the inevitable, unwanted bumps and splotches? Rent the Runway has a few pointers for you!

Problem: A pimple, smack-dab in the middle of your forehead. To pop, or not to pop?

Solution: Hands off! Hand-to-face contact will introduce new bacteria to the skin and make that acne even worse.

Problem: I love my fast food, especially after a long night of going out. Chocolate is even better. I heard this isn’t great for my face, though.

Solution: The American Academy of Dermatology maintains that of all of the factors contributing to acne, such as hormones and stress, our diet’s impact is difficult to determine. Maybe a certain food causes your acne to flare up, but, for the most part, the problem you’re going to have with everyday McDonalds is more scale than skin-related. You’re off the hook.

Problem: I just bought two cucumbers to slice up and put on to liven up my under-eye skin. Will this work?

Solution: Cucumber flesh is 90% water, which will hydrate your skin. The Vitamin C content in cucumber also means it is a natural anti-inflammatory. Yes, those cucumbers may make you look silly, but the puffiness in your skin will go down.

Problem: I want to get rid of my acne overnight. Will toothpaste work?

Solution: Toothpaste does NOT cure acne. Try prescription acne medication instead.

Problem: How much moisturizer should I use for the winter? More than usual?

Solution: It is often necessary to use more moisturizer during dry winter weather than is necessary in the summer. If your skin is acne-prone, try water-based cream.
