Everyone probably knows her as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett from the sitcom Modern Family but Sofia Vergara is a lot more than just this dynamic role. Born in July of 1972 in Columbia, Sofia is one of 5 siblings and daughter to a stay at home mother and a cattle-ranching father. She is extremely smart, proven by her attendance at Columbia University for Pre-Dentistry. However, dentistry was not to be her destiny. She was discovered on a beach by a photographer who recognized her potential for modeling and she went on to become a runway model at age 23. She has previously commented on the beginning of her career. ”I’m a natural blonde. But when I started acting, I would go to auditions and they didn’t know where to put me because I was voluptuous and had the accent–but I had blonde hair. It was ignorance: they thought every Latin person looks like Salma Hayek.”
Her life took a heart wrenching turn in 1998 when her older brother was killed in a failed kidnapping attempt. This event impacted the actress and her family greatly. She moved her son, mother and sister to the United States to be with her following the incident. Then, only 2 years later she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. However, showing her true strength and determination, she was treated and made a full recovery.
The actress has led anything but a charmed life, yet it is evident from her onscreen appearances to her red carpet interviews, she lives with style, grace and confidence. Her breakout role in Modern Family has led to ad campaigns for Covergirl and Emmy nominations including “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.”
