Valentine’s Day isn’t exactly my thing; you either end up on a forced, romantic date with your guy — and what’s romantic about that? — or hanging at a girlfriend’s place shoving your face with chocolate and avoiding any talk of men. But this year, there’s a third option: the movies. And with a less than exhilarating holiday 2011 run at the theaters, I’m looking for any excuse to go.
For your guilty pleasure’s viewing, we have sappy, lovey-dovey “The Vow,” about a pair of perfect newly weds torn apart by a car accident that puts Paige (Rachel McAdams) into a coma. When she awakes, Leo (Channing Tatum) spends the rest of the movie trying desperately to win her back, and make her remember their true love. Sound familiar? I had flashbacks of “The Notebook,” too, but I’m not exactly complaining. The two-minute preview almost left me in tears, and for God’s sake, Channing Tatum on Valentine’s day? It’s not even fair…2/10/12
20th Century Fox’s V-day rom-com has an action edge and girl power which, honestly, makes me feel better about going for the whole sappy romance bit. “This Means War” follows two of the CIA’s best spies who discover they are seeing the same girl, and then put all their tactical experience into winning her over. Now, I’m not saying it won’t get corny quickly — it probably will — but with Reese Witherspoon and, my personal favorite, Chelsea Handler, I’m guessing it’ll be worth a few laughs, too: 2/17/12
