Have you found yourself getting bored of your daily treadmill and dumbbell drill? As a long-standing gym junky, I am quick to notice that point in the year when the excitement of New Year’s resolutions starts wearing off, when going to the gym becomes a daily chore rather than a daily release, when the row of elliptical machines is filled with uninspired faces listening to old playlists yet again…

I tend to call people who have reached this point in their fitness trajectory as suffering from a classic case of “Gymonotony!” Unfortunately Gymonotony is a lot more common than it really needs to be, and it truly makes me sad. That’s why I took this past month of my life to try out a bunch of unconventional ways of working out and prove to you all that you can keep your fitness resolution, continue getting in shape for that special event or perfect outfit, and still have a kick-ass time!

So keep reading, for my Top 5 Creative Ways to get Fabulously Fit!

1. Scorching Yoga

As someone who is quite the cardio queen and lives a busy fast-paced life I can really appreciate a good Yoga session to stretch out my muscles, calm me down, and help me feel more balanced and centered. BIKRAM Yoga is a type of hot yoga typically practiced in about 105 ͦF. According to founder Bikram Chaudry, the heat helps deeper stretching, injury prevention, reduced stress, and reduced tension. Although the main purpose of the workout is overall health and organ revitalization, the workout simultaneously increases strength, circulation, flexibility, and eliminates toxins! I say, it’s like going to a sauna and getting a massage in one!

2. Cardio Dancing: Join the Party!

Aerobics are a great way to exercise because you target a high variety of muscle groups at once. Dancing allows you to express confidence in your body language everywhere you go. So what happens when you combine them? You get the fabulous dance-inspired fitness class: ZUMBA! Okay, I admit, I happen to teach a bunch of ZUMBA classes so of course I love them, but don’t let me convince you that they are great, break a sweat and see for yourselves! Each class covers styles from all over the world, works the entire body, and boy will you break a sweat!

3. Pound Drumming

Swap your free-weights for weighted drumsticks in this fast-paced jam session! Whether your instructor has your striking the ground or balls, while simulating drumming, you will get to hear and see the body working symmetrically in form and exertion. With non-stop movement, you can burn up to 900 calories during an hour-long class! Did I mention stress-release?

Popping up everywhere now are Pole Fitness classes that allow you to learn the sexy steps and engage those sexy abs muscles in a killer core and full body workout. Why not be a little daring. It’s all in the name of health right?

5. Crossfit Boot Camp

CrossFit is a new strength and conditioning program similar to what many police academies, military units, champion martial artists, and elite professional athletes use worldwide. Workouts feature dynamic exercises like plyometric jumps, and Olympic lifts while using non-traditional weightlifting equipment such as kettle bells, sand-bags, suspension systems, or water-filled implements.  The program is structured in such a way that participants are challenged to do a certain number of repetitions in a workout in a specific time frame; the more advanced CrossFit participants will actually compete against each other to see how fast they can complete the daily workout. If you’ve got a competitive edge or “My-workout-is-my-survival” attitude, then this is the program for you!

Let’s face it. We all still want to work on our physiques whether it’s for that special event we’ve been planning out for months, an approaching vacation, or just feeling fit and fabulous every day. Even though I live in New York and largely spoke about a bunch of the cool classes I’ve tried in the past few months, whether you live in NY or not, the idea is to take some chances, go and explore what’s around you! Why should we have to accomplish our goals in complete misery? I say, spice up your life and take advantage of everything your surroundings have to offer! That’s the key to being fun, fit, and fabulous!
