Come Sunday night, Mad Men fanatics will finally get a smoke-filled breath of air. After a 17-month gap, the greatly heralded period series will return to AMC for its 2-hour season premiere. Despite the long wait and the hype, relatively no specifics have been leaked about the long-awaited season. Maybe that’s due to the creator’s gag order on the series’ 5th season screener. Off-limits topics include the year, Don and Megan’s relationship, and pretty much every loose end from the 4th season. Even so, the TV world is abuzz with praise and reassurement that all our questions will be answered.
We left Don Draper and the rest of the Mad Men cast in 1965, a very turbulent time for the country and Sterling Cooper Draper and Price. The New York ad agency, which had still been trying to establish itself as a top firm, struggles to find its footing after American Tobacco leaves. All seems to be spiraling downward for Don Draper, but a new relationship and spontaneous marriage proposal sheds hope on what’s to come. “Coming into the season, it’s a whole new story and everyone is in a different situation, because that’s what I want to do with the show,” Weiner tells USA Today. “We will try spin a new story with new tensions.”
I, for one, can’t imagine being excited for any show after a year-and-a-half break…but then again Mad Men isn’t just any show. No other series could have me so hooked that I gave up entire days to watch all four seasons on my laptop while studying abroad in Rome. The series is pitch-perfect, from the writing, to the wardrobe, to the talented cast. Even if you’re not a fan, get into the spirit and dress up in your best ’60s frock, pour yourself a martini, sit back and enjoy the show.
