Ask any person about pole dancing and pole fitness, and it generally conjures up images of gentleman’s clubs and strippers. But actually, pole fitness is a worldwide exercise phenomenon.  All over the world men and women alike are taking classes, competing in Pole Fitness Competitions and getting in the best shape of their lives. Pole is said to be “very addictive,” and appeals to many different demographics for all different types of reasons. For those who are afraid of the seediness that is associated with pole dancing, take heart: There are extreme differences in what you would see in a gentlemen’s club verses a Pole class. Pole dancing doesn’t have to be dirty, since there are many styles and interpretations of the sport.

Over the past few years, pole fitness studios have emerged across the country, and these studios usually offer a variety of classes. There are classes reserved only for strength training, while others teach their students the art of pole dancing, ranging from beginner to advanced levels. But even the classes purely devoted to teaching pole could replace a regular workout routine since it works all muscle groups… especially if you wear heels to class.

After interviewing some of the girls who attend pole classes, many said that they took the classes not only to “tone up for summer,” but also to feel sexy. “For the first time in my life, I feel graceful and pretty. It is so empowering to be able to watch the instructor do this beautiful, sensual trick, and then be able to do it myself. It has really improved my self-confidence a lot,” said one student. “I like it because it is a fun alternative to spending 40 painful minutes on the treadmill. And I toned up real fast since I started,” said another.

Marion Shaffer, owner and founder of Art of the Catwalk, a pole fitness studio located in Tallahassee, Fl, gave some suggestions for those who have never taken a pole dancing class before. “Don’t be discouraged at first, it takes a lot of time and effort to make your moves look effortless and flowy. Understand that although most of these movements might seem intimidating and awkward, once you let loose, commit, and get over your initial fear, you will come to find your groove.”

If you are looking for a way to spice up your work-out routine this Spring, try something new! Spring is the time of new beginnings, so try a pole class. And besides, in what other fitness routine can you wear platform heels?
