For many of us, a dashing young rebel named Jack Dawson on a little ship called the Titanic was the first to capture our hearts. Of course, there would be no Jack Dawson without the man behind the character: Leonardo DiCaprio. We were heartbroken when he sank into the sea, no matter how many times we had already watched the scene. The Titanic was made classic, and it came back in a triumphant return to the big screen in a 3D re-release of the 1997 movie, earlier this summer.
Not every movie that he’s been in or will be in will touch our collective hearts like the Titanic did, but an entire generation of (mostly female) movie-goers will always have a soft spot for Leo, and will dutifully flock to see his performances.
That’s why we’re so excited about the latest Leo movie on the roster for this summer: The Great Gatsby. In it, DiCaprio takes on the title role of Jay Gatsby, a mysterious and frivolous multi-billionaire who is a newly minted member of the nouveau-riche crowd of 1920s New York. The cast also boasts Carey Mulligan as socialite, Daisy Buchanan, and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, the dutiful narrator. Look at the beautiful set, costumes, and people…
Even without Leonardo DiCaprio’s help, The Great Gatsby is a classic in and of itself: a story of love, hate, and betrayal. I remember having to read it for a high school English class: of course, no one wanted to read it, but by the end we were all heavily invested in the story and in the characters. We hope the movie will live up to the classic. We can’t wait to see it!
Are you going to see it? What movie are you looking forward to this summer?
