As I look forward to my last year of college, I think back to what experiences and responsibilities have been the most rewarding and beneficial to my future “real life” self. I believe that the modern “triple threat” for female graduates is this: Smart, Social, and Well-Groomed. I’ll go through each, one at a time, and explain why I think that these are the best qualities to have when leaving school for good and embarking on the journey that is adulthood.
First of all, as much as you can be blessed with intelligence and the ability to memorize everything you read, you must know how to work hard for knowledge in order to be successful. Knowledge is different than intelligence simply because you can BE intelligent, but you have to GAIN knowledge; learning through experience is the best way to gain all the knowledge you can before you graduate. This can be done through campus leadership roles, internships, even holding a fun position that you love in your sorority! The most common misconception about “life after college” is that you need a 4.0 or a million different internships and honor societies to get a job…when in reality, above that is SOCIAL SKILLS.
Ahh, social skills. The ability to communicate with coworkers and clients is one of the most important qualities that a future employee can have. You might be Albert Einstein and have graduated with a 4.0, but if you can’t work in a team setting and get along with coworkers, you will a) hate your job, and b) everyone will hate you (i.e. drinks with work friends will not happen). Overall, being social is good for your work life, social life, and love life…so why not?!
Lastly, being well-groomed shows that you are responsible, care about your appearance (which shows dedication that can be applied to clients/customers) and your employers will trust you [and your style] enough to send you out to meet clients, etc. You’ve probably had a lot of fun experimenting with different styles in college, so why not take what you love and morph into work-appropriate? That way, you can be stylish, reliable, intelligent, and everyone will wonder how you pull it all off. Plus, you can do it on a budget using Rent the Runway!
Success? Be the girl that makes everyone say: “I don’t know how she does it!”
