Now that you know about how Rent the Runway works, I want to let you in on why I absolutely love being an intern for this fabulous company. Not only has it given me experience in the fashion industry far from the Big Apple in little Eugene, Oregon, but it has opened my eyes to some real career opportunities for the future! As a PR manager for our team, one of my favorite parts of my job is to plan our fashion shows on campus, which has really helped to spark my interest in event planning as a future career. I also have had a hand in setting up fundraisers around campus to raise money for our shows while also raising money for St. Jude’s hospital. It’s a lot of hard work being a Rent the Runway representative, but the experience has made it all the worthwhile!

Next year I am lucky enough to be attending Louisiana State University, and will be interning for Rent the Runway down in the south for the LSU team. That being said, our team is looking for girls to come aboard and offer their talents for the ’13-’14 year! Corporate is looking for motivated, fun, fashionable girls who can contribute to the RTR brand, as well as promote the company on any campus across the country. Responsibilities

•  Dedicate at least 10-15 hours per week to this internship

Hi Everyone!

I’m Page Sacks and I’ll be your resident Sorority Expert for the summer, here and ready to help you get ready for Sorority Rush!  Whether you’re already a member or looking to join, you want to be sure you stand out and I’m here to help you do just that.  So, you might be thinking “Who are you?”  Well, let me answer that for you.  I went to school at the University of Southern California, and while I will keep my sorority chapter a secret, there was no way I could hide my Trojan Pride!  I was a member of my sorority for the entire four years of my collegiate life, I served in a variety of leadership roles within the sorority and within the Panhellenic community and after graduation I went on to continue to work for my sorority as a traveling consultant and then a volunteer advisor.  I’ve traveled across the U.S. and have experienced Sorority Recruitment (or Rush as you may know it) in many different states, styles and cultures, but the basic principles always stay the same.

You see, my motto with my company, Sister Style, is “You Only Get One Chance To Make A First Impression!”  Whether you are the recruiter or the recruited, you’re both looking for a match and you only get one chance to make sure you give your best first impression.  With Sister Style I help young women prepare to participate in Sorority Recruitment for the first time.  I help them with conversation skills, interview techniques and of course, wardrobe selection!

Enough about me, I’m here to help you all out!  I wanted to start off with a list of things that you might not already know about Sorority Rush (especially if you’re just starting college in the Fall).  Leave any thoughts, questions or shout outs in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them all.  Looking forward to a fun summer with you!

5 Things You Don’t Know About…Sorority Rush

1. They are just as nervous as you are! – The members of each sorority are just as worried about impressing you, as you are about impressing them.  So go into the process, take a deep breath and don’t forget to be yourself!
2. There is a method to the madness – while you might think you’re just going to browse through each sorority, find the girls you “click” with and then join, it’s actually very different.  You will get the opportunity to meet with a lot of young women, but the Panhellenic Council for the University will ensure that you visit each chapter on the campus at least once and that you and the sorority have the best chance for making great connections.
3. Letters of Recommendation & Legacies – These are terms you might not be familiar with, but are used all the time in sorority recruitment.  The sororities want to hear about you before you show up on their doorstep on the first day of recruitment, so if you know someone who has already graduated and is/was a member of a sorority, ask them to write a letter of recommendation for you to that chapter!  And if you’re a legacy (sister, daughter or grand-daughter) of a certain sorority, make sure she writes you a letter as well!
4. Don’t be afraid to eat! – The rumors about getting judged for eating the cookie, or drinking the smoothie, are completely false!  Why else would they have them?  I can guarantee that behind the scenes the members of each sorority are dying to get their hands on those goodies too!  Maybe, just stick to things that won’t make too much of a mess while you’re eating, you’d hate to find out after the event that you’ve been walking around with some frosting on your cheek ;  )
5. Be yourself! –  Ever hear the saying, “Be yourself because everyone else is taken”?  The sororities are already full of all the other kinds of young women, but they are looking for someone fun and unique just like you!  Be yourself, and you’ll surely end up where you belong!

Dress for Success – This may seem casual at first, but remember rush attire should be more like going to tea with your mom instead of the mall with your friends.  Show off your style while wearing pieces that stand out but won’t distract.  Rent the Runway is filled with great dresses that will do just that for your recruitment experience.  Here are some of my faves:

I started as an Associate Brand Manager at Neutrogena Cosmetics 7 months ago, and was pleasantly surprised to find that working in Marketing is just as great as I had hoped it would be. I work on the Neutrogena Cosmetics business specifically, and as if getting to play with makeup everyday weren’t enough, a couple weeks ago I was given the amazing opportunity to attend Rent the Runway’s 2013 College Capstone Weekend in NYC. Neutrogena was sponsoring the event, and so I went as a brand ambassador. I was blown away by both the opportunities that Rent the Runway provided as well as the attendees.

Friday night I attended the kick-off event at Avenue in New York City with over 200 Rent the Runway reps. From the blow dry bar to the nail art station to the Neutrogena Cosmetics makeover area, there was everything you needed to get a full head to toe glam look, perfect for a Friday night. While at the event I was able to chat with a bunch of the attendees. Not only did they look amazing in their Rent the Runway outfits, but their knowledge and passion for fashion and entrepreneurship was very impressive and many seemed far wiser than their college years. Though hearing surprise guest Lo Bosworth from ‘The Hills’ discuss her new company was a highlight of the evening, I must say the best part was getting a chance to meet all the amazing students.

The fun continued Saturday at the all-day training marketing bootcamp that took place at the XO Group’s office in Downtown NYC. I got to sit in on talks by marketing and fashion executives like the editor of Lucky, who educated me on the latest 2013 trends and justified my weekend shopping trip. I then presented on Neutrogena’s history, specifically how we were able to transition from a small soap producer to the international beauty company that we are today. I stressed the importance of gaining the expert endorsement of Dermatologists in growing our brand, and how making our consumers brand advocates via social media is crucial to our marketing strategy today. To show the importance of social media, we challenged the Capstone attendees to create shareable pieces of content for Instagram and Facebook using a few Neutrogena products. In just 5 minutes, the girls were able to create a series of really engaging and well designed images that communicated the Neutrogena brand in a simple but effective way. Being able to attend the Rent the Runway capstone weekend was an amazing experience. I was truly inspired by the creativity, passion, energy and intelligence of the students I met, and have no doubt that I encountered many future entrepreneurs, fashion executives and CMOs.

1. You get to work for an organization that makes high fashion accessible for real women. “High fashion, No Airbrushing,” am I right, ladies?
2. Resume Building Realness.  Plus, when you’re a rep you get to hone your PR, communication and marketing skills.
3. Rep discounts keep you looking fly (I had the hottest dress for my sorority formal).
4. Since so many reps are Greek you get to hang out with ladies from different organizations and meet more people.

First, the trunk shows were really exciting, because there are not too many places at LSU that we can go to promote and have girls try-on and rent with us. We would always go to a sorority after they had their chapter meetings so we knew we would get more than a few rentals. The girls truly love what Rent the Runway has to offer. Most girls want to wear a dress only once, which makes Rent the Runway a perfect fit for someone that does not want to pay too much!

Then there are the girls that I got to meet being a part of the LSU Rent the Runway team. Everyone was so sweet and nice and made me feel so welcomed the first meeting I went to. As the weeks went by at every meeting we all got closer and really grew fond of one another. Another thing that I really did love about the group of girls was that we weren’t all fashion majors; it was such a large dynamic, but we all came together for the love of fashion. So, are you going to apply for a Rent the Runway position? oncampus.renttherunway.com/promote

My position of a blogger is probably one of the best internships I have had thus far. I get to do what I love (write about fashion trends and tell people how not to dress!) and get recognition and credit for it. It is an easy way to do something productive that will help me further on in my career.

In addition, I am on a team with 5 other girls in different sororities and we all get together once a week to discuss how we want to meet our goals. This helps foster relationships with girls that I would not have had the good fortune to meet otherwise.

Lastly, the team of women who supervise the College Runway Rep program from Rent the Runway are incredibly helpful and easy going. They are super approachable, knowledgeable, and aim to make the internship experience as painless as possible. I have had several experiences where I had to work with unpleasant people and it was awful, to put it nicely. Rent the Runway is nothing like that!

As a business major, I was looking for an activity that would not only center on fashion, but also give me experience in the business side of the fashion industry, since that’s where my interests lie. Rent the Runway fit the bill perfectly–I have been able to work with the designer dresses (99% of the time they are even more gorgeous in person, I promise) while developing my sales and entrepreneurial skills.

I’ve put my RTR Campus Rep experience on my resume, and whenever it comes up during job interviews I am able to talk about everything I’ve learned with ease because it’s been such a hands-on experience. I can already say that working as a RTR Rep has helped me get an internship at a fashion public relations firm in NYC, which goes to show how marketable this position is.

I have gained not just invaluable professional experience, but irreplaceable friends through being a RTR Rep. I wouldn’t have gained this opportunity to join the Rent The Runway team at the University of Michigan without meeting some of the girls already on the team and being completely inspired by their drive and commitment. You’ll find that you share a lot of passions and goals with the other girls involved with the RTR Rep program. They will become another group of friendship and support during your time at college, and for me as a freshman, that helped make a huge campus seem less intimidating.

Looking back now, I can’t imagine what this past year would have been like without Rent The Runway. It’s been a fantastic experience that has enriched me both professionally and socially, and I’m so excited to see what next year holds for our team.
